ARMS AND SLEEPERS
black paris 86 (2007/EXPECT CANDY)
INDIE/POST-ROCK. With electronic sources being the main focus in their compositions, ARMS AND SLEEPERS are nevertheless creating a warm sound with ambient undercurrents. Varying configurations of rich, brassy textures, choppy beats and ethereal vocals make up an overall yield that is an engaging, subterranean pulse driven by amorphous low-end frequencies. "black paris 86" is a tight, intense record, showing a young band at a stage you wouldn't expect it to be on yet. Connected to different kinds of music, from ambient-influenced indie-rock to calm, sometimes hypnotic music with dozens of other styles flowing in, the album shows the development the band has made in the past , resulting in a unique and original style.
ARMS AND SLEEPERS
matador remixed (2010/EXPECT CANDY)
INDIE/POST-ROCK. "matador remixed" feels like a natural and obvious next step for ARMS AND SLEEPERS. The latest release features 9 remixes by other artists and friends, and 1 remix by themselves. UZI & ARI, LYMBYC SYSTEM; AMANDA ROGERS, BOY IN STATIC/THE CONSULATE GENERAL, THE AMERICAN DOLLAR, NOLENS VOLENS, THISQUIETARMY, ELIKA and BIGADIGA all contribute and help create quite a diverse album, from snippets of r&b and club music to more mellow singer/songwriter moments to hypnotic electronica and trip hop-induced tracks. By the end of 44 min. it's clear that "matador remixed" is fully capable of standing on its own as a complete piece of music. Vinyl includes a MP3 download card.
CHRIS LEO'S VAGUE ANGELS
the sunny day.. (2010/EXPECT CANDY)
POST-PUNK. First of all, CHRIS LEO recorded this album with actual bands rather than the one man drunken show making his rounds around whatever toys were in the studio that day we're used to (and many of us love). These are bands he'd toured with and the songs congeal like these musicians have seen some nights together. These songs aren't forced, they sit comfortably in his discomfort; it's almost more disconcerting. This is the album where CHRIS LEO picks up new fans, let's hope that doesn't send him running deeper into oblivion. The cover art was painted by Gibb Slife (Les Savy Fav). Vinyl includes a MP3 download card.
MAKE BELIEVE
s/t (2008/EXPECT CANDY)
POST-ROCK. The various other bands (CAP'N JAZZ etc.) and projects Kinsella and Zurick played in since then had a much less straight approach mostly. Equally great and unique, bands like JOAN OF ARC were less loud, impetuous and spontaneous. Since MAKE BELIEVE have grown, the enthusiasm of the beginning is naturally gone. Improved and complex, almost mathematic songwriting is their trademark nowadays and defines their style. Nevertheless their 1st songs are still as beautiful as they were in 2004. So far the 1st MCD was only available on CD, apart from a strictly limited to 250 vinyl edition that was sold-out right after its release and probably never made it to Europe. Yet again, it’s a limited edition. 500 copies will be made, so you better hurry.
POLITE SLEEPER
lake effect (2009/SABOTAGE/EXPECT CANDY)
POST-ROCK. Following 2008’s critically acclaimed "seens" full-length the latest is less a stopgap and more a proper introduction for the Brooklyn trio after spending much of last year abroad. Gone are the banjo and pedal steel interludes, the erratic arrangements; gone are the sad sack lullabies and 2min. strummers. Enter Mellotron drones, three part harmonies and at the core a rhythm section that still drives each narrative with a confidence to say that less is truly more. Somewhere Britt Daniel of SPOON just nodded. The 9 tracks on "lake effect" are equal parts unique and obtuse, poetically indifferent and as plain as the Midwestern roots of the members themselves. LP includes a MP3 download card.
VAGUE ANGELS
truth loved (2007/EXPECT CANDY)
INDIE-ROCK. "truth loved" is the 1st album by VAGUE ANGELS, the band of Chris Leo who is known for his outstanding former bands THE VAN PELT and THE LAPSE. "truth loved" showcases 12 songs of a new maturity in Chris’ distinctive and always adventurous musical style. Elaborate, enigmatic lyrical narratives combine with lush productions to bring a dream-like quality to the record. Instrumental moments serve as travelling themes between destinations. For those who have grown up following the winding path of Chris’ musical career, "truth loved" is a wonderful new chapter of a continually powerful musical force, from an equally powerful musical family.
