GUN CLUB, THE
miami (2012/MUSIC ON VINYL)
GARAGE-POST-PUNK. THE GUN CLUB was formed by Jeffrey Lee Pierce, former head of the Blondie fanclub in Los Angeles. Joining him was Brian Tristan, who was later renamed Kid Congo Powers during his stint with THE CRAMPS. By 1982, the band had signed to Blondie guitarist' Animal Records and temporarily relocated to New York to record 1982's "miami", with backup vocals by Debbie Harry on select tracks. Going for a higher, more desolate sound, frontman and slide player Jeffrey Lee Pierce and his band were literally on fire. This is post-punk snake-charming music, evil, smoky, and brash. In the bird's-eye view of history its songs are all classics.
GUNMEN AND FLIGHTPATHS
Songs named after states (2001/ALONE)
SCREAMO / EMOCORE. GUNMEN AND FLIGHTPATHS deliver 3 tracks of passionate emotive hardcore. The vocals are strained and raspy, while the music is catchy, a tiny bit noisy, fairly frantic, and generally hard hitting.
GUNNAR HANSEN / U.T.I.
HARDCORE. Following their scorching tracks on the "toronto's burning" compilation, U.T.I. turns up the insanity! Frantic pounding, shredding, fist pumping hardcore with speed changes and possessed female vocals make for a unique and pissed off thrash attack. Hamilton’s GUNNAR HANSEN follow up their sold-out debut 7" with their passionate and sincere, guitar driven fast hardcore. A strong dual guitar attack built over driving bass lines pound at your ears while their negative lyrics peck at your eyes.
s/t (2014/SOUTHERN LORD)
HARDCORE/METAL. The fierce 4 piece skillfully combine crushing d-beat rhythms with a classic hardcore-punk directness, and bring forth a maelstrom of metallic riffs, amalgamating into one brutal and arresting sonic assault, fans of THE CURSED, and CONVERGE especially will enjoy this. The LP deliver 10 tracks that keep the fire burning, exploding with lyrical angst and musical fury from the get-go, bombarding the listener with catchy riffs and spot-on political statements.
HARDCORE. GUT FEELING, North Carolina hardcore veterans featuring former members of CATHARSIS, UNDYING, TORCH RUNNER, NIGHTBEAR and others, return with their 1st new recording since 2012. This is 6 tracks of fast hardcore, a little reminiscent of early 2000s hardcore like CHAMPION or early COMEBACK KID. Limited edition of 500 copies.
HARDCORE. GUT FEELING is a North Carolina hardcore band consisting of various members around the region (ex-CATHARSIS, UNDYING, TORCH RUNNER, NIGHTBEAR etc.). Musically, these guys deviate from the previous, more metal-laced endeavors and the only part that really carries over from the previous is top-notch songwriting, structure, and musicianship. GUT FEELING does a great job bringing back anthemic hardcore in the vein of bands such as CHAMPION, TRIAL and early COMEBACK KID. Think fast, polished hardcore with melodic guitar overtones, a tasteful spattering of gang vocals, and singalong parts.
GUTS & GUNS
the pig rug collection (2012/SM MUSIK)
CRUST/STONER-HARDCORE. "the pig rug collection" is the 1st record of this congenial band from Leipzig, Germany. They play a noisy, heavy and crusty styled of stoner, sludge and doom hardcore with double female voices. . It's not so easy to find the prefect words - some say it's female fronted sludge, doom but that's not the whole truth. The sound is not that hyper overproduced and there is still a lot of hardcore spirit left. In the end it is massive and crushing music inbetween mid-tempo hardcore, emotional crust and stoner with strong d.i.y. roots.
age of the fanatics (2016/PROSTHETIC)
DEATH-METAL. The debut album of caustic, flesh-ripping death-metal from Sweden's GUTTER INSTINCT, "age of the fanatics" takes the legacy of Swedish death-metal into darker territories. Following their debut, this new opus develops a blackened edge to their already haunting death-metal, drawing influence from bands such as BÖLZER, GRAVE MIASMA, BLACK WITCHERY whilst still reeking of that buzzsaw Swedish sound. Forging their own way organically through the mire of death-metal, "age of the fanatics" is testament to the unsettling creative depth of the extreme metal underground.
the insurrection (2015/PROSTHETIC)
DEATH-METAL. Raw, atmospheric and blackened buzzsaw Swedish death-metal at it's finest. A super limited, vinyl only, 4 track MLP from monstrous GUTTER INSTINCT. A ravenous assault of true old-school death-metal for all appreciators of early ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, GRAVE and the haunting overtones of DARKTHRONE's oulside Journey. "the Insurrection" release, adding a more atmospheric black-metal dynamics to their already mammoth sound.
GUYANA PUNCH LINE
irritainment: songs to disturb the comfortable (2001/PRANK)
HARDCORE. Thirteen songs hurling fragments of melody and bombardments of lyrical attack. This is the 2nd album from South Carolina's GUYANA PUNCH LINE and a continuation of their quixotic quest to kick life into counter-culture thinking while trying not to laugh too hard. More to the point brutal than their debut "maximum smashism", the music of "irritainment.." cues from INITIAL STATE and IN/HUMANITY (where some members previously served time) blending moody, dark, brooding hardcore with abrasive thundering manic thrash, drifting further and further into the deep-end-with bent and destructive guitar riffs combined with a fierce, solid rhythm section back up.
GUYANA PUNCH LINE
maximum smashism (1999/PRANK)
HARDCORE. Anthemic terror, swathed in feedback and noise and shining guitar wail. Bombarding crunch edged by spastic fits of thrash. Emo-violence is dead...long live mashism! A barreling quick hardcore attack from former members of ANTISCHISM/INITIAL STATE, IN/HUMANITY and .FUCKINGCOM. You'll get 10 songs laced with dark humor and political impact.
giants despair (2012/SIX FEET UNDER)
INDIE-ROCK. Featuring members of bands like COLD WORLD, MOTHER OF MERCY, and STICK TOGETHER, GYPSY step away from hardcore and bring melodic indie-rock that takes cues from JAWBREAKER and DINOSAUR JR. Colored vinyl version includes a digital download card.
cold in the guestway (2011/SARGENT HOUSE)
INDIE/POP-ROCK. GYPSYBLOOD's songs tend to start dissent among listeners trying to describe exactly of what their songs are reminiscent. Some common references include a strange amalgam of PAVEMENT's early hazy-pop singles, THE JESUS AND THE MARY CHAIN and early GUIDED BY VOICES. Put simply, it's a noisy, soft-focus approach to classic pop.
